Experiment: Lemon Volcano

By Mei Yee

I looked up some experiments online to try out with the girls and see if they actually work. This one is a lemon volcano.

(Items needed; lemons, baking soda, food coloring, and dish soap. I also grabbed extra lemon juice because I didn’t think the juice from squeezing the lemons would be enough.)

The instructions say to cut a bottom in the lemon so they can stand up on their own. I just used the drink holder from our drinks this morning.

They gave us two instead of one, so this worked out, then each of my kids could have their own setup. But I still put those on top of a tray for easy clean-up.

I then cut the tops off the lemons, scooped out the middle, and then juiced the middle. We then set up the lemons in the cupholder.

Inside of the lemon peel the girls added; the food coloring of their choosing (a few drops), about a tablespoon of baking soda, and about a teaspoon or dish soap.

These don’t have to be exact, as you can add more even after the lemon juice is added.

Now the last step, add the lemon juice!

(We used gel food dye so that is why there are some chunks of color there.)
